Florida Stone Crab Season Mid-October through Mid-May
The stone crab season generally runs from mid-October through mid-May. The claws are sold by the size Medium, Large and Jumbo The larger the claw the higher the price per pound.
Stone crabs have the ability to grow back the claw, so fishermen usually take just one claw from each crab, which is then returned to the water. With one claw remaining, it is easier for the crab to get food for itself.
Florida stone crabs prefer to feed on oysters and other small mollusks, polychaete worms and other crustaceans.
A “good” stone crab season would see 3 million pounds of claws.
